Some of my favorite days have been spent getting afternoon tea! I have been to Laudurée in many different cities spanning the globe from Paris to LA. I have tried a couple of different tea spots in Houston, but nothing that quite hit the spot like Proper Rose Garden did.
I first found out about this afternoon tea café from the Tokyo Night I attended last week. I wasn't able to try anything there, but their cute Instagram made this a must try for me. So yesterday afternoon, after visiting the Shop 'til You Drop event near by, I decided to give this place a try.
The inside of the tea café has a beautiful aesthetic with chandeliers and a wisteria wall, plus a large grass wall in the back with a neon sign. Their colors are beautifully curated in a way that remind me of the cute tea shops I had visited in Paris, or even in cities like LA. The unique aspect of this shop is the Japanese food offerings like edamame, dumplings, fried tofu and tatsuyuki sandwiches. Additionally, their flavors hit the mark with popular Japanese flavors in America right now like taro and green tea.
I ordered the proper rose garden set with the tatsuyuki sandwich, green tea mille crepe cake, and honey earl gray black tea with a side of cream. The sandwich was AMAZING. The bread was soft and the flavors were indicative of very well-made components. The tea was more floral than I preferred, but overall was the right temperature. The tray came with a number of assorted sweets from scones to truffles to piroulines. The crepe cake was delicious and had a very strong green tea flavor, which I prefer to flavored items that you can't taste.
After I tried a bit of everything and finished off my tea, I also ordered a pot of rose milk and an egg sandwich. The egg in the sandwich was perfectly cooked to a medium boiled egg, layered on top of a cold egg salad, between the same soft white bread they used in the tatsuyuki sandwicch. But that rose milk.... this is where their golden egg lies. I wasn't sure how I felt about the idea of flavored warm milk, but oh my was I wrong.
The flavored milks are sweet and creamy and extremely addictive. They offer flavors like rose, lavender, taro and honeydew. You can also choose your sweetness level ranging from 0% to 125% - for my milk I chose 70% which ended up being the perfect sweetness level. If you come here, I highly recommend going straight for the potted milk menu and choosing a couple of desserts to share with a friend.
Overall, I will definitely be revisiting the Proper Rose Garden, probably with my sister, to try more of the teas, potted milks and desserts. Check out their website and menu here before visiting. Let me know what looks good to you in the comments below!
